  1. A form of psychotherapy developed by the
  2. American science-fiction writer L Ron Hubbard
  3. (1911-1986), which formed the basis for
  4. scientology. Hubbard believed that all mental
  5. illness and certain forms of physical illness
  6. are caused by `engrams', or incompletely
  7. assimilated traumatic experiences, both pre-
  8. and postnatal. These engrams can be
  9. confronted during therapy with an auditor and
  10. thus exorcised. An individual free from
  11. engrams would be a `Clear' and perfectly
  12. healthy. Hubbard later expanded this theory:
  13. behind each mind is a nonphysical and
  14. immortal being, the Thetan, which has
  15. forgotten its true nature and is therefore
  16. trapped in a cycle of reincarnation,
  17. accumulating engrams with each lifetime. If
  18. these engrams are cleared, the individual
  19. will become an Operating Thetan, with
  20. quasi-miraculous powers. During the 1970s and
  21. 80s the Church of Scientology was accused of
  22. having taken on a cultlike character and of
  23. financial duplicity.
